Universal scalability
3 Rounds for time:
500 meter row
12 - Dead-lift body-weight
21 - Box-jumps, 20 inch box
12 - Dead-lift – 1/2 body-weight
21 - Step ups, 8 inch box
OR
12 - Upright rows (wooden dowel or training plates)
12 - Steps, marching in place

Is one permutation any less functional than the other?

Is one permutation any less functional than the other?
Yes, depending on the functional needs of the individual. This is self dictated by the individual's abilities. For example, the scaled down version would not be functional for, say, a fireman (whose job demands much strength and endurance). But would be functional for an otherwise sedatary retiree. Self dictating.

Your are on to it Michael. Scaling the work outs is the streategy for mass aceptance of Crossfit training methodologies. IMHO, Crossfit should breakout into levels the various routines. For example, 'the girls' and fight gone bad, should have 3 levels: I, II and III (elite). This way folks could find an entry point that is appropriate for them and exprerience the well-being that comes from the Crossfit commitment.
